On the line side, the DSF250 supports protected OC-48/STM-16, OC-12/STM-4 and OC-3/STM-1 interfaces. On the client side, Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps) and SPI-3 (POS-PHY Level 3) interfaces are available. The DSF250 maps up to 2.5 Gbps of traffic from a variety of client side interfaces. Traffic destined for the SONET/SDH trunk from any client side interface can be assigned at VT/VC and STS/VC granularities. Any client side payload data can be mapped into any legal combination of VT1.5/VC-12, STS-1/VC-3 or STS-Nc/VC-4-Xc positions of the SONET/SDH payload. The DSF250 performs all SONET/SDH section and line terminating functions including normal or enhanced framing, scrambling/descrambling, parity generation and monitoring, remote line error indication processing, section trace message generation and extraction, orderwire and user channel insertion and extraction. Serial insertion and extraction of all section and line data communication channels, and synchronization message insertion and extraction is also supported. Linear line protection schemes are supported by performing error detection, signal degrade or failure detection based on provisionable bit error rate thresholds, and automatic protection switching information extraction and validation. Line status is consolidated and presented to software in a manner that facilitates rapid identification of faults. The DSF250 supports full SONET/SDH pointer processing of any combination of STS-1/VC-3 and concatenated payloads up to 2.5 Gbps. Path overhead monitoring and automatic detection of path level defects for UPSR/SNCP operation, and path trace message generation and monitoring are provided. Packet mapping, with static or dynamic bandwidth allocation, is supported for up to two Gigabit Ethernet GMII interfaces, up to eight 10/100 Mbps Ethernet SMII interfaces, and one OIF SPI-3 8/32-bit interface. Packets encapsulated using GFP, X.86 LAPS or RFC1662 PPP are mapped to a SONET/SDH transport payload. Up to 24 logical channels with individual flow control are supported using the SPI-3 interface. Backpressure on the Ethernet ports is implemented with IEEE 802.3x flow control with programmable trigger thresholds. The Ethernet interfaces provide all necessary counters to support SNMP and RMON/MIB-II implementations. The SPI-3 interface provides a 32-bit packet counter. Virtual Concatenation (VC) with LCAS is supported on Ethernet and SPI-3 interfaces and provides 24 virtual concatenation groups (VCGs). A total of up to 48 high order paths (STS-1/VC-3, STS-3c/VC-4) and up to 336 low order paths (VT1.5/VC-12) are available across all VCGs. An internal buffer supports differential delay compensation of up to 200s, while an external SDRAM interface is used to provide differential delay up to 250ms.
