DC/DC C onverter Modul e Eval uati on Boar d
Introduction
Thank you for c hoos ing Alter a Enpir ion power produc ts !
You are evaluating a new class of DCDC c onverter pr oduc t, a c om plete pow er
system on silicon. This user guide is applicable to evaluation boards part num ber
05194 R ev A on the PC B bac k s ide. In addition to this doc um ent, you w ill als o
need the lates t devic e datas heet.
The EP5348UI is a complete m odule with integr ated m agnetic s .
The evaluation board is des igned to offer a w ide range of engineer ing
evaluation capabilities.
O utput voltage is program m ed us ing a res is tor divider. The board c om es
populated w ith four pre-placed resistors and a jum per to c hoos e one of
four pres et output voltages .
Eas y jum pers ar e provided for the follow ing s ignals :
o Enable
o VOUT selection
Num erous tes t points ar e provided as w ell as c lip leads for input and
output connections
The board c om es with input dec oupling and input r evers e polarity
protec tion to protec t the devic e fr om c om m on s etup m ishaps .
Quick Start Guide
Figure 1 shows a top view of the evaluation board.
STEP 1: Set the “ENABLE jumper J1 to the D is able Pos ition, as
s hown here.
STEP 2: Set the output voltage by s etting jum per J4 to one of the pre selected
output voltage settings. See the O utput Voltage Selec t s ec tion.
STEP 3: C onnec t Pow er Supply to the input c lip leads , VIN (+) and GND (-).
CAUTION: Even though the evaluation boar d c om es w ith revers e polar ity
protection diodes, be m indful of the polar ity.
STEP 4: Connec t the load to the output c lip leads VO UT ( +) and GND (-).

STEP 5: Power up the board and m ove the ENABLE jum per to the enabled
position. The EP5348UI is now powered up.
Pleas e note jum per J5 is not to be us ed on this boar d, and it has been left
unpopulated. LLM is not offered on this produc t.

Output Voltage Select
The output voltage of the E P5348UI is pr ogram m ed us ing a s im ple res is tor
divider. The evaluation board comes pre-populated with a s et of four jum per s
that allow the us er to c hoos e one of four pres et voltages . R efer to Figure 2 for
the s pec ific s ettings . If no jum per is populated the default voltage s etting w ill be
0.6V.
Higher output voltages can be program m ed by populating m ultiple J4 jum per
positions. It is als o pos s ible to rem ove one of the pres et res is tor s and replac e
with another value to generate any des ired output w ithin the devic es operating
range.
Refer to the produc t data s heet for fur ther inform ation on s etting the output
voltage.
CAUTION: None of the J4 jum pers c an be c hanged w hile the devic e is
enabled. D oing s o c ould dam age the part.
Figure 2. Close up of the VOUT setting jumpers, J4. The nominal output voltage
settings, from left to right are: 1.0V, 1.2V, 1.80V, and 2.5V. Jum per as
s hown here s elec ts 1.0V. All voltages are s ubjec t to VOUT tolerances.
Figure 4 shows the resistor values that m ake up the voltages m entioned above.
Multiple jumpers can be populated to achieve other output voltages. Any of the
res is tor s R 2, R 3, R 5, or R6 c an als o be c hanged to m odify the c orres ponding
VOUT setting. Do not change R1. This value has been selec ted as part of the
control loop compe nsation circuit.

Test Recommendations
Recommendations
To guarantee m eas ur em ent ac c urac y, the follow ing prec autions s hould be
observed:
1. Make all input and output voltage m eas urem ents at the boar d us ing the
test points pr ovided. This w ill elim inate voltage drop ac ros s the line and
load c ables that c an pr oduc e fals e readings .
2. Meas ure input and output c ur rent w ith s eries am m eters or ac c urate
shunt resistors. This is especially important when measuring efficiency .
3. Use a low loop induc tanc e s c ope pr obe a cross COUT to m eas ur e VOUT
Ripple to avoid noise coupling into the probe ground lead. The
recommended probe configuration is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Rec om m ended pr obe c onfiguration.
4. The board has soldermask openings for 0805 ceramic capacitors at the
input and output edges . If you are planning to do any radiated EMI
tes ting on this boar d, plac e a 10uF, 0805, X7R or X5R c apac itor at
eac h board edge. The added c apac itor at the input edge is for high-
frequenc y dec oupling of the input c ables . The added c apac itor at the
output edge is m eant to repres ent a typic al load dec oupling c apac itor.
Pleas e c ontac t Altera P ower Applic ations s uppor t for further details
regarding radiated EMI testing.
I nput and Output Capacitors
The input capacitance on the boar d is a 2.2uF 0603 MLCC. There is a pre-tinned
pad that allow s for an additional 0603 case size M LCC to experim ent w ith input
filter performance.
The output capacitance on the board is a 10uF 0603 in parallel w ith a 1uF 0402.
NOTE: Capac itor s m us t be X5R or X7R dielec tr ic form ulations .
