The97F8000SeriesofcapacitorsmaybeusedinACapplicationswherethevoltagewaveformisnon
sinusoidal.ThisApplicationNoteisprovidedtoassistinthecorrectuseofthecapacitorswherehigher
frequencyharmoniccurrentsarepresent.IfyouneedfurtherassistancepleasecontactRegalBeloit’s
CapacitorsOperationthroughyournormalsaleschannel.
HigherfrequencycurrentsarecommonlyencounteredinthefiltercircuitsofStaticPowerConverters.These
frequenciesrangefrom180to1500Hzfora60Hzsysteminvariouscombinationsoftheoddharmonics
dependingonthetypeofconverter.Generally,therearenotsignificantharmoniccurrentsabovethe25
th
harmonic.
Thesecapacitorscancarryatotalcurrentofupto15amperesRMS(fundamentalplusharmonics).The
EquivalentSeriesResistance(ERS)foreachCatalogNumberisshownintheESRtablesonthispage.This
valuemaybeusedtocalculatetheexpectedwattslossforaparticularapplication.Theusermustdetermine
thetotalRMScurrent(fundamentalplusharmonics)fortheapplication.Thewattslossisthencalculated
usingtheequation:

(2) Runningthecapacitorsatcasetemperaturesabove70ºCwillhaveasignificanteffectonexpectedlife.
