GENERAL DESCRIPTI ON
The AK4356 is a high performance six channels DAC corresponding to 96kHz sampling mode of DVD.
Two channels of them can operate up to 192kHz sampling fully correspond to DVD-Audio standards. The
AK4356 introduces the advanced multi-bit architect ure for DS modulator. This new architecture achiev es
the wider dynamic range, w hile keeping much the same superior distortion characterist ics as
conventional Single Bit w a y. In the AK4356, the analog outputs are filt ered in the analog domain by
switched-capacitor filt er (SCF) with high tolerance to clock jitt er. The analog outputs are full differential
output, so the device is suitable for hi-end applications.

OPERATION OVERVIEW
n Sy stem Cl ock Input
The external clocks which are required to operate the AK4356 are MCLK, LRCK and BICK. The master clock (MCLK)
should be synchronized with sampling clock (LRCK) but the phase is not critical. MCLK is used to operate the digital
interpolation filter and the delta-sigma m odulator. The frequency of MCLK can be set by CKS0-2, and can be selected to
norm al, double or 4 times speed mode by DFS0-1 (See Table 1). 4 tim es speed mode can be used for only DAC1. If DAC1
is in 4 tim es speed m ode, DA C2 an d DAC 3 are autom atically pow ered down. When the states of SLOW, DIF2- 0, DFS1- 0
or CKS2-0 changes, the AK4356 should be reset by PDN pin or RSTN bit.
All external clocks (MCLK, BICK and LRCK) should always be present whenever the AK4356 is in normal operation
mode (PDN = “H”). If these clocks are not provided, the AK4356 may draw excess current and may not possibly operate
properly because the dev ice utilizes dy nam ic ref reshed logic in ternally . If th e external clock s are not present, the A K4356
should be in the power- down m ode (PDN = “L” or all DA Cs are set in th e power-dow n m ode by PW1-3 bits ) or in the reset
mode (RSTN = “0”). Af ter exiting reset at pow er-up etc., the A K4356 is in the pow er-dow n m ode until MCLK an d LRCK
are input.

n Output Vol um e
The AK4356 includes chan nel independent dig ital output volumes (A TT) with 256 levels at 0.5dB steps including MUTE.
These volumes are in front of the DAC and can attenuate the input data from 0dB to –127dB and mute. When changing
levels, transitions are executed via soft changes; thus no switching noise occurs during these transitions.

n De-emphasis filter
A digital de-emphasis filter is available for 32, 44.1 or 48kHz sampling rates (tc=50/15ms). It can be set for DAC1
(SDTI1), DAC2 (SDTI2) and DAC3 (SDTI3) independently. It is enabled or disabled with the control register data of
DEM1-0 and DFS1-0. The de-emphasis filter is disabled at double or 4 times sampling m ode (except for DFS0 = DFS1 =
“0”).

n Zero detection
The AK4356 has channel- independen t zeros detect fun ction. When the input data at each ch annel is contin uous ly zero for
8192 LRCK cycles, DZF pin of each chan n el g oes to “ H ”. DZ F pin of each ch an n el immediately g oes to “ L ” if input data
of each channel is not zero after going DZF “H”. If RSTN bit is “0”, DZF pins of all channels go to “H”. DZF pins of all
channels go to “L” 4/fs after RSTN bit returns to “1”. If DZFM bit is set to “1”, DZF pins of all channels go to “H” only
wh en th e in pu t data at all channels are contin u ous ly zeros for 8192 LRC K cycles. Zero detect fu n ction can be dis abled by
DZFE bit. In this case, DZF pins of all channels are always “L” (except for the case of RSTN = “0”).
n Soft mute operation
Soft mute operation is performed at digital domain. When the SMUTE pin goes to “ H”, the output signal is attenuated by
-¥ during 1024 LRCK cycles. When the SMUTE pin is returned to “L”, the mute is cancelled and the output attenuation
gradually chang es to 0dB durin g 1024 L R C K cy cles . If th e soft mute is cancelled within 1024 LR C K cycles after starting
the operation, the attenuation is discontinued and returned to 0dB. The soft mute is effective for changing the signal source
without stopping the signal transmission.

n System Reset
The AK4356 should be reset once by bringing PDN = “L” upon power-up. The AK4356 is powered up and the internal
timing starts clocking by LRCK “” after exiting reset and power dow n state by MCLK. The AK4356 is in the pow er-down
mode until MCLK and LRCK are input.

n Power-down
All DACs are placed in the pow er-down mode by bringing PDN pin “L ” and each digital f ilter is also reset at the sam e time.
The internal register values are initialized by PDN “L”. This reset should always be done after power-up. Because some
click noise occurs at the ed ge of PDN, the analog output should be muted externally if the click noise influences system
application. Figure 6 shows the power-down/up sequence.
Each DAC can be powered down by each power-down bit (PW1-3) “0”. In this case, the internal register values are not
initialized and the analog output is Hi-Z. Because some click noise occurs, the analog output should be mu ted externally if
the click noise influences system application.
If DAC1 is in 4 times speed mode (DFS1=1, DFS0=0), DAC2 and DAC3 are automatically powered down. Both analog
outputs go to analog common voltage (AVDD/2).

n Serial Control Interface
The AK4356 can control its functions via both pins and registers. CKS2-0, DIF2-0, DFS0, DZFE and SMUTE pins are
ORed with their registers.
Internal registers m ay be w ritten to th e 3 wire uP interface pin s: CSN, CCLK & CDTI. The data on this interface con sists
of Chip address (2bits, CAD0/1), Read/Write (1bit), Register address (MSB first, 5bits) and Control data (MSB first,
8bits). Address and data is clo cked in o n the rising edge of CCLK. Data is latched after a low-to-high transition of CSN.
The clock speed of CCLK is 5MHz(max). The CSN pin should be held to “H” except for access.
The chip add ress is determined by the state of the CAD0 and CAD1 inp uts. PDN = “L” initializes the registers to their
default values. Writing “0” to the RSTN bit can initialize the internal tim ing circuit. But in this case, the register data is not
be initialized.

Figure 9. Ground Layout
Note: AVSS and DVSS must be connected to the same analog ground plane.
1. Groundi ng and Power Supply Decoupling
The AK4356 requires careful attention to power supply and grounding arrangements. AVDD and DVDD are usually
supplied from analog su pply in system . Altern atively if A VDD and DVDD are supplied separately , th e power u p sequence
is not critical. AVSS and DVSS of the AK4356 must be connected to analog ground plane . Sy stem an alog groun d and
digital ground should be connected together near to where the supplies are bro ught onto the printed circuit board.
Decoupling capacitors should be near to th e AK4356 as possible, w ith the small valu e ceramic capacitors being the nearest.
2. Voltage Reference Inputs
VREFH sets the analog output range. VREFH pin is normally connected to AVDD with a 0.1mF ceramic capacitor. All
signals, especially clocks , shou ld be kept aw ay from the VREFH pin in order to avoid unw anted coupling into the AK4356.
3. Analog Outputs
The analog outpu ts are full-dif ferential ou tputs and 0.55 x VR EFH Vpp (typ) centered around the internal comm on voltage
(about AVDD/2). The differential outputs are summed externally, VAOUT=(AOUT+)-(AOUT-) between AOUT+ and
AOUT-. If the summing gain is 1, the output range is 5.5Vpp (typ @VREFH=5V). The bias voltage of the external
summing circuit is supplied externally. The input da ta format is 2’s complement. The output voltage(VAOUT) is a positive
full scale for 7FFFFF(@24bit) and a negative full scale for 800000H(@24bit). The ideal VAOUT is 0V for
000000H(@24bit).
The internal switched-capacitor filter and external low pass filter attenuate the noise generated by the delta-sigma
modulator beyond the audio passband.
DC offs et on AOUT+/- is elim inated w ithout AC cou pling since th e analog outpu ts are diff erential. Figure 10 an d 11 show
the example of external op-amp circuit summing the differential outputs.
