The nonvolatile timekeeping RAM is function equivalent to any JEDEC standard 32k x 8 SRAM. The device can also be easily substituted for ROM, EPROM and EEPROM, providing read/write nonvolatility and the addition of the real time clock function. The real time clock information resides in the eight uppermost RAM locations. The RTC registers contain year, month, date, day, hours, minutes, and seconds data in 24-hour BCD format. Corrections for the day of the month and leap year are made automatically. The RTC clock registers are double-buffered to avoid access of incorrect data that can occur during clock update cycles. The double-buffered system also prevents time loss as the timekeeping countdown continues unabated by access to time register data. The DS1644 also contains its own power-fail circuitry, which deselects the device when the VCC supply is in an out-oftolerance condition. This feature prevents loss of data from unpredictable system operation brought on by low VCC as errant access and update cycles are avoided. PACKAGES The DS1644 is available in two packages (28-pin DIP and 34-pin PowerCap module). The 28-pin DIP style module integrates the crystal, lithium energy source, and silicon all in one package. The 34-pin PowerCap Module Board is designed with contacts for connection to a separate PowerCap (DS9034PCX) that contains the crystal and battery. This design allows the PowerCap to be mounted on top of the DS1644P after the completion of the surface-mount process. Mounting the PowerCap after the surface mount process prevents damage to the crystal and battery due to the high temperatures required for solder reflow. The PowerCap is keyed to prevent reverse insertion. The PowerCap Module Board and PowerCap are ordered separately and shipped in separate containers. The part number for the PowerCap is DS9034PCX. CLOCK OPERATIONS - READING THE CLOCK While the double-buffered register structure reduces the chance of reading incorrect data, internal updates to the DS1644 clock registers should be halted before clock data is read to prevent reading of data in transition. However, halting the internal clock register updating process does not affect clock accuracy. Updating is halted when a 1 is written into the read bit, the 7th most significant bit in the control register. As long as a 1 remains in that position, updating is halted. After a halt is issued, the registers reflect the count, that is day, date, and time that was present at the moment the halt command was issued. However, the internal clock registers of the double-buffered system continue to update so that the clock accuracy is not affected by the access of data. All of the DS1644 registers are updated simultaneously after the clock status is reset. Updating is within a second after the read bit is written to 0. 2 of 11 DS1644/DS1644P DS1644 BLOCK DIAGRAM Figure 1 DS1644 TRUTH TABLE Table 1 VCC 5V 10% <4.5V >VBAT 4.5 volts) the DS1644 can be accessed as described above with read or write cycles. However, when VCC is below the power-fail point VPF (point at which write protection occurs) the internal clock registers and RAM are blocked from access. This is accomplished internally by inhibiting access via the CE signal. At this time the power-fail output signal ( PFO ) will be driven active low and will remain active until VCC returns to nominal levels. When VCC falls below the level of the internal battery supply, power input is switched from the VCC pin to the internal battery and clock activity, RAM, and clock data are maintained from the battery until VCC is returned to nominal level. 5 of 11 DS1644/DS1644P ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATINGS* Voltage on Any Pin Relative to Ground Storage Temperature Soldering Temperature -0.3V to +7.0V -40C to +85C 260C for 10 seconds (DIP Package) (See Note 7) See IPC/JEDEC Standard J-STD-020A for Surface Mount Devices *This is a stress rating only and functional operation of the device at these or any other conditions above those indicated in the operation sections of this specification is not implied. All voltages are referenced to ground. 2. Typical values are at 25C and nominal supplies. 3. Outputs are open. 4. Data retention time is at 25C and is calculated from the date code on the device package. The date code XXYY is the year followed by the week of the year in which the device was manufactured. For example, 9225 would mean the 25th week of 1992. 5. tAH1, tDH1 are measured from WE going high. 6. tAH2, tDH2 are measured from CE going high. 7. Real-Time Clock Modules (DIP) can be successfully processed through conventional wave-soldering techniques as long as temperatures as long as temperature exposure to the lithium energy source contained within does not exceed +85C. Post solder cleaning with water washing techniques is acceptable, provided that ultrasonic vibration is not used. In addition, for the PowerCap version: a. Dallas Semiconductor recommends that PowerCap Module bases experience one pass through solder reflow oriented with the label side up ("live - bug"). b. Hand soldering and touch-up: Do not touch or apply the soldering iron to leads for more than 3 (three) seconds. To solder, apply flux to the pad, heat the lead frame pad and apply solder. To remove the part, apply flux, heat the lead frame pad until the solder reflows and use a solder wick to remove solder. 9 of 11 DS1644/DS1644P DS1644 28-PIN PACKAGE PKG DIM A IN. MM B IN. MM C IN.
