SolarCellTypes
Therearethreemaintypesofsolarcellmaterial,eachwithitsownpropertiesthatmakeitunique.
Thefollowingcostandperformancetrade‐offsshouldbeconsideredwhencomparingvarioussolar
cellmaterials:
Polycrystallinecellsarecommonlyfoundinoutdoorapplicationsandhaveaspectralsensitivityrange
of500nmto1100nm.They’reinthemediumpricerangeandtypicallyoffera13%powerconversion
efficiency.
Monocrystallinecells,suchastheIXOLARTMSolarBIT’sandSolarMD’s,haveaspectralsensitivityrange
from300nm(near‐ultraviolet)to1100nm(near‐infrared),whichincludesvisiblelight(400to700nm).
Duetothiswidespectralrange,theycanbeusedinbothindoorandoutdoorapplications.
Monocrystallineorsingle‐crystallinematerialisthemostexpensivebutitdoesnotcontainimpurities,
andassuchthepowerconversionefficiencydoesnotdegradeoveroperatingtime.Thepower
conversionefficiencyofcommerciallyavailablemonocrystallinecellsrangesfrom15to22%.The
surfaceofthesecellsisahomogenousdarkblueordarkgrey.
Finally,amorphouscells,whichworkinthespectralrangeof300nmto600nm,areused
predominantlyindoorsinproductssuchassolarpoweredcalculatorssincetheyarenotsensitiveto
theupperlightspectrumandcannottakeadvantageofnaturalsunlight.Theyofferabout5%power
conversionefficiencyandaremostlyusedwithultra‐lowpowerdeviceslikeclocksandelectronic
calculators.Amorphouscells,likepolycrystallinecells,sufferfromefficiencydegradation.
SolarpanelsdevelopelectricityinDCvoltagewhichis
differentthantheelectricalutilitygridnetwork(ACenergy).
Invertersserveasthegatewaybetweenrenewableenergy
resourcesandtheACelectricalgrid(specific

Monocrystallinecellscanbeusedinindoorand

spectralsensitivity,300to1100nm.However,the
outputpowerofasolarcellisproportional(overa
widerange)totheincominglightenergy,and
irradianceisgenerallymuchhigheroutdoors.
Withacellefficiencyoftypically22%measuredat
waferlevel,SolarBIT’sgivetheabilitytoextendrun
timeevenin‘lowlight’conditions,increasebattery
lifeandruntimeinasmallfootprint,whichcanbe
